 What are they hiding from?Why do some people hide their online status? Why is there an option for keeping a game private? What is the point of that? I know you can delay the moves being available for others to see, but as I understand it, private games can never be viewed by anyone other than the players. Why would you want to do that? Thanks |

Hiding Online Status And also so that I don't feel rushed to make a move because my opponent knows I'm online and might be waiting around the computer for me to move. I realize that this is a bit silly, since whether my opponent wastes some time in front of his/her compute waiting for me isn't my concern, but it did affect me a little bit in the past when I didn't hide my online status. |

Some Possible Reasons ... 1) So burglars or hit-men cannot track the times you are at home, or where-ever you compute from. 2) So that The Boss does not see someone being on a game site during work hours. 3) To discourage chatting or Move expectations if you do not feel like chatting or moving on that day. 4) To give your opponent a thrill from not knowing if you are online or not, as you tick your clock down to 2 minutes or less remaining before making your move. 5) Because some opponents that see you online may deliberately delay making their own move in your game, so that you cannot reply immediately; because they want you to have less thinking time to reply, or because they don't want Their clock running again immediately for your game. 6) To add mystery & intrigue ************************* PRIVATE GAMES: A) Coaching games & showing someone great lines of play. Experimental games(try out new moves or plans), practice games(EG players go to selected position and try to play it, for purpose of their Chess skills...rather than defining the opening/position) or rusty player does not want the condition of their game seen. C) Testing out your secret analysis/improvements/TN's of a critical opening against another player, before using in more important game(s). Bearing in mind that Private Game might be delayed from finishing indefinitely so as to keep "The Secret(s)" until sprung in other games. D) To engage in conversation that is personal, not public. E) To make others WONDER, What's Going On? (...While we talk about them, in private ********************************************************************* }8-D |

I don't make moves necessarily when opponents are on-line. Currently I make a move in the game where the time left will make it easier for me to manage my schedule. I try to prevent games from running out of time together. So I make moves that will create space in between the required moves. That allows me to concentrate on one game at a time, more or less. I didn't used to do it this way. This practice came about when I started to play 25 to 35 games at the same time. I still probably make the same number of moves per day, but don't feel as stressed. Time trouble almost never happens, as I rarely let the clock go below 24 hours. When I do, it is because I'm busy with work. Regardless when I come back to play, I can prioritize which game needs to be concentrated upon first. Sometimes I will catch up on all my games and start doing conditional moves. They speed up the games but don't really make a difference as to how many games there are that it is my turn. That's probably because my opponents tend to play fast when I make conditional moves. Again, probably because they are on-line. |

I never hide my online status... Usually I'll look at my games first thing and write down the moves, and have a bit of a look at the position. Possibly I'll use the analysis board, just to get a bit of a feel for the position, but usually the decision is made after home analysis. Then I'll potter around the site for a while, often, though not always, coming back to 'My Games' for one last look before signing off. If someone messages me in that time I will usually spot it and respond at once if I have time, but I won't see any moves played unless I visit the game itself. I'm not sure whether there is an option that alerts one when a move is played on one of your games, but if so, I don't use it. All my games are written down on paper (5 games to a page) and that is what I use to keep track of games. So I find it doesn't really matter to me if anyone knows I'm on line or not. But then, I'm the sort of guy who won't answer a telephone just because its ringing... Cheers, Ion |

It is a bit like MSN wen you come on line just to check your email everyone starts talking to you but you just wanted to check your email. so you ignore those incoming and go offline again. I think 50% of those people will be mad because you ignored them.. You where on line and they expect! impatient as they are, that you!! respond to them!! And if not, they think you are mad, ignore them, have a grudge, or that they are not important anymore... on GK it is a bit different but a on line star means ah he/she will move soon but perhaps you are taking 5 hours time on just 1 game out of 50 games so people get impatient and that is most annoying... |

Anyway, I see quite a few messages in profiles complaining about players who hide their on-line status, with one even implying that it is impolite. I can't get my head around this logic; how can it be impolite or in any way wrong to exercise a right that GK has made available to you? It's like complaining when somebody parks a car legally in a designated parking space. TA is quite right that the grievance is only in the eyes of the beholder. |

myrydin ... Which brings up Another point; maybe they ARE turning their light on 16 hours a day, but turn it off when they are actually Online. Ahhhh. See we just dont know. In fact, I have been doing this for six-months just to catch up on light-on time . . . Well okay, not really. **** BUT its a bit like this. If you are on their Friend aka Buddy List, then you Can see when they are online. So if you are not sparking a thousand points light, and a friendlier machine gun hand ... Wait, I went too far with that quote, didnt I. Anyway, maybe you have not been Friendly Enough ...Eh? Or at least outgoing enough to buddylist with others . . . |

1 - users that you have put in your ignore list still are able to see when you are online/when you were last online 2 - people that aren't logged in or that don't even have an account can see exactly if you are online or when you were last online |

oww of course only that first bit is to myrydin. I agree with him ... what's the problem? BUT, or PS/BUT if you prefer; THIS does bring up a VERY INTERESTING QUESTION~!
