I don't know how I solved this one...javascript:popw('/tactics-board.pl?bd=4664',700,680) te # 4664 if the link isn't working Anyway I solved it in 23 seconds to boot. Highest rated puzzle I've solved by far. I just tried to solve it again because I figured there is no way it should be rated 1427. I couldn't get the last move, Re7. Not making sense to me at the moment. Maybe that wasn't part of it the first time. The first few moves seem so obvious that the puzzle should be below 1200 in my opinion. Why Re7? |

It turns out...I failed the problem as well, preferring 4.Rf7, which picks up the f-pawn at once, after which White gradually rounds up the others. After 4.Re7 ... Black's choices are very limited, and meet the same response. It turns out that White has a forced mate. Now, I did think that might be the case, but figured upon Rf7 to be good enough. A possible continuation is 4.Re7 f5 5.Re6+ Kc7 6.Kd5 f4 7.Re7+ and now: 7...Kb3 8.Rb7+ Ka5 9.Kb6 and mate next; 7...Kc8 8.Kc6 Kd8 9.Kd6 f3 10.Ra7 Ke8 11.Ne6 f2 12.Re7# 7...Kb8 8.Kc6 f3 9.Kb6 any 10.Re8# 7...Kd8 8.Kd6 f3 9.Ra7 Ke8 10.Ne6 f2 11.Re7# Now, here's a question: would you expect a 1427-player to find this? He might - but I would certainly consider it something 'over par' at that level - and even a good deal higher. Possibly it was a 1427-level player who found it and played it. In GK play, I might look for the quick kill, but as I know that 4.Rf7 is a cast iron guaranteed gimme win, I probably wouldn't bother. So what level should we put this solution? Of course, it may well be that we are (I am) still coming to terms with what these exercises are all about... |

own. In fact I can't believe I did the first time. I must have gotten real lucky. |
