spoiler alert... don't read any further unless you've done the exercise...

Is the last move in this exercise really necessary? Hasn't the maximum advantage been realized? Will black end up taking losses if no other move is made?

Agreed

I got every move right except the last move. I felt Kd7 was better, keeping my rooks connected. I've seen many CT problems with similar faults, although GK assures us this is impossible.

Having not yet read, but seeing the position ...

seems to be two variations of handing the critical weakness that mate, and two approaches under each variation ... sigh. Ok put this one up till after dinner.

Please simply enable "limit to classic problems only" option in the settings -- it excludes all exercises with alternative lines that are not as good as the main solution, but still win the overall game.

It seems to me that the reaction of

....Rc8 in the alt line, in reponse to Rc1 should be incorrect. This is what I got to mate after Ra7 instead.
1. Nc4 Nxd4
2. Qd1 Bxe4
3. Ne3 Nf3+
4. Qxf3 Bxf3
5. Rfe1 Kd7
6. Rac1 Ra7
7. Rc7+ Rxc7
8. Rd1 Rc6
9. Bb4 Rg6
10. Rxd6+ Rxd6
11. Bxd6 Qxh2+
12. Kxh2 Rh6+
13. Kg1 Rh1#
Of course I am probably missing some cheap check shot in the course of things, and have not done the extra-certain-double-double-impossible-to-err-recheck-for-cheap-checks yet in this alt line. Nor even in the K to 'that other square' line either. Probably do that tomorrow . . .

Also need look over All N attacking N to lure it away while not allowing a check in the process lines. BUT am rather sure that the Rook lifts to Sac line is shorter than lines of Rook tries to attack and capture the KNIGHT lines. Or any R doubles to h lines.
