 Online Status Hidden by Playerthere to hide? After I have made all my moves, if I knew that one or two of my opponents were still on-line I could stay on-line a bit longer. I have waited ages in vain before now hoping that any opponents were still on-line. Perhaps I should take a chill pill. The Snowman. |

to be or not to be..."online". There are many reasons opponents hide their online status.I'll just list a few,but there are about 20 reasons!You may laugh at some of these reasons,but they are true.And remember,GK allows players this hidden status,so just be patient.The rules are the rules,even as an option. 1.)Some opponents WANT to SLOW a game down a bit.It has been proven,even by your own admittance of wanting to move,move,move if you know the player is online,so you will stay online.It has been proven that psychologically,games tend to speed up if BOTH players know each other is online.Nothing wrong with this,but some players actually DO NOT want this! 2.)Some players want to make the "last"move of the day,so they "wait"till they see you move,and then "sneak" the last move in for the day,in the hopes you will not return to move till the next day,or much later.Its sort of like,they want your clock ticking for the day,not theirs! 3.)Some players tend to receive alot of messages(or more messages) when they have their status light on.This is NOT desired by some opponents who prefer NOT to respond back to constant messaging.Its not antisocial behavior,its more of a "let me alone and I want my privacy"scenario! 4.)Some opponents want to play blitz and not let everyone on GK know where they are,like in the blitz room!When you go shopping,do you let every stranger know your going to the mall? This way,some players are not bothered by a few opponents that might keep trying to challenge them in blitz.You know,some players actually reach a point of mild intimidation,by constantly challenging someone even after the answer was...no,no,no!So,again,keeping a low profile through a hidden on-line status helps a bit! 5.)Some players simply feel its "cool"to be cruising through the site and doing what they want like an "invisible man"! 6.)Some players like to remain invisible,aleast from time to time when they just want to go to the forums and read the forums and not play much for a day or two or be bothered by forum responders.Like...."hey John,I see your online,what do you think about this idea?" 7.)Some players WANT YOU to be annoyed!!!!!!If they get you bothered enough by hiding their on-line status you might make a blunder in your game!!!!!!!!!!So,its a psychological ploy!No way,right?Think again,Snowman100...it bothers you,right?Hmmmmmm. and#8.) The "abyss"is a dark secret place that is a bottomless pit and a complex labyrinth to escape from!Since an "abyss"does not advertise where "it is",it may suddenly appear below your feet asking you for a game!Dark,stealthy,devious and cobra deadly!........so no "online status"for me!Am I looking over your shoulder?Am I deeply researching your past games,seeking "weakness"before I open up the challenge door below your feet?Am I watching your forum posts before I decide to respond? When I first got a telephone They had gotten this idea that if they left a message on the Voice Mail, that I (or Somebody?!) would actually someday be LISTENING to those messages; and That erroneous idea apparently led them to form all manner of associated Expectations; which were of course never fullfilled. Because I once read somewhere that failed expectations are frequently a cause of producing Anger in an individual, I decided it would perhaps be better for them if I no longer had Voice Mail . . . |

You know,I live in a penthouse apartment in NYC most of the time,with private everything and security like you see in the movies.So,its no wonder I like stealth,and the possibility of blocking ALL messages(if I could).But thats me.I'm a bird of a different feather,or how does that go? |

I never feel good about leaving my computer on,not even the power button on my monitor,especially since I only play from home,not work....and may suddenly find myself gone on a business trip for days,then forget to turn the system off.So,i'm in the habit of doing my business on the computer and turning it off immediately. I do have an advanced water cooling system that could keep the system cool for days if need be,but its in for repair right now. Funny,i've had some opponents state on their profile that they won't play opponents that hide their on-line status or they won't be "given first preference",ect,ect. Of course before I challenge them,I turn my status "back on",keep it on till move #3,and then turn it off again!!Nasty!(But within the rule guidelines).So then they "stall"the moves. Dosen't bother me!One opponent did that to me,(stalled for 20 moves)only to get caught in a Phildelphia traffic jam on the way home.He missed the move and timed-out by about 10 minutes!So waiting to the last minute to move can be detrimental to your health!Ha,ha. Psychological warefare...and I usually come out ahead.... |

So do we get a new Statistic. ? so at years end i can see that i was on line on GK for 2 months 3 days and 7 hours 4 min and 9 sec ( sort of a idle timer. ) |

I have no time-outs so far and play reasonably fast most of the time. Sometimes I play multiple moves a day. Othertimes however I don't feel much like playing chess online, especially if I've got a lot of otb action going on. Then I just play the boards that I need to play in order to avoid losing on time. If other players know I'm online they might be disappointed, if I choose not to move in their game while I'm still making moves in other games. |

On line status hidden by player Thanks for taking the time to add comments. I am now hopefully a bit wiser. You have all made some good points and if the Snowman doesn't get a little more tolerant I think he may melt! Good moves to all. The Snowman. |

You can always try and ask GK(or start a vote) to add to the open challenge list under "more options" an optional check box that states opponents that prefer to keep their online status "on or off".Of course,this would not include tourneys and other things,or guarantee that the opponent will "keep"their status on or off,but it will certainly increase the probability of getting what you want in an opponent.By comparison,even checking those boxes like... preferring players to "make several moves a day",does not guarantee that this is what they will do.
