WTF...?
There's a thing on GameKnot I completely don't understand. I observed that players with lowest ratings (say, less than 750) usually don't play, they just keep starting new games from time to time and losing them by a timeout. Could somebody give me an explanation of this phenomenon? Are they bots or something?

not bots...
They start games, and either they forget, or they realise that they don't, in fact, like chess and
give up on the site... maybe they come back for a second stab at it then give up again...

I was part of the 'gave up on site' crowd for a bit, but thankfully my passion for chess grew!

To want to or not want to succeed....
Alot of people just trying out the game of chess for the first time really do not take anything seriously,do not have any real direction,no big motivation and simply come and go as they please,time-out,or lose a piece after 10 moves or so and just give up.

Sometimes this applies to players that have been playing for a while as well. Its just something to pass the moment,win,lose....who cares, they think.

Chess isn't for everyone, even the ones that think they want to learn or be good at it.It takes alot of work, patience, dedication and being really serious at WANTING to be better at the game. Many people simply "underneath" do not possess the "willpower" to actually want to succeed at the game, even though they may tell someone that they want to become better.
I,for example, have burned the "midnight oil"reading every chess book I could get my hand on for years before I began to formulate deeper strategies into the game.Playing against those early model tabletop chess machines helped me alot...and this was long before all this DVD stuff came out on the market.

Motivators like joining that chess club in High School,or a club in your local town help motivates a player to become better. Its sort of like a gym.Are you motivated enough to become a serious body builder just at home with a few pieces of work out equipment,or would it be better to join a gym for $25.00 a month, work out on excellent equipment and work out with others who can motivate you, help you out and give you alot more work out tips?
Yes,the latter usually is better. And same with chess.

Alot is simply lost with the new breed of players of want to learn out in cyberspace!
Being from the old school,I firmly believe that you CANNOT be motivated enough, and learn enough through your online computer and chess sites! You must mingle with REAL players, alot of real OTB play and many times get a personal instructor working UP CLOSE to you,or atleast a strong chess playing friend that can show you the game on a one to one basis.
Its simply way too easy to read few forum tips,or read a few things on the internet and think you will become some class C,B, or A player. Its not impossible but more unlikely, that this will happen. In other words, its even easier to shut your computer off and say "the heck with it" compared to actually going to a club or playing in a tournament, even an unrated tourney with others or friends in a group. This shows you want to become more serious about the game and have taken good steps to improve.Switching on a computer screen...well,anyone can do that!

So,you will always have those players with a 500-1000 rating who will never reach beyond that level. But if just some of them read just a few chapters out of a REAL BOOK on how to develop their pawns and a few major pieces in the first 10 moves, they might become 1300 players overnight!

It takes some effort, however! If not, then you will get a repeat of what you mentioned above, pbednaruk!

Can I cry now ?! . . .
My first tournament rating Was 777 and I Did Try. Really...and Its not easy losing to a 9 year old; even when you're 12 ! But nobody ever called me a BOT before !?!!!

Thank you Raphael, for being my first victim 4 tournaments later. Ah ... how he fought back, twisted, & laid traps like a magnificent marlin . . .

We all start out low in chess strength,so did I.But its the ones who start to become serious enough to want to take things to the next level that show us all promise.I see some players on this GK site that have been on for years and years and still remain at 700-1000 rating.
Many are adults, not some young children eating lollipops.
And GK gives you 1200 to start. If you look at their games up close, you will see that they are not trying or even "attempting"to try to develop their pieces, castle in 10 moves(for example) or any other basic thing necessary to just make them just a slightly better player.

So again, there are the ones who start low and get to atleast 1700-1800....and then there are those who never reach beyond 1000 because they really do not try to,or care,or have no direction or motivation. But whatever floats your boat I say!

In the meantime, you will continue to have things like 6 moves made and then a time-out!
Hey,they say..."I was going to move before I timed-out,but I have to leave to see that movie"...so who cares about a dumb game of chess... just let it time-out"!

I think at every level of chess skill there is a player just above that level muttering "OMG! I cannot believe he just made that bad move."
