GameKnot Engine strength
Hey Guys, I've been playing a couple of times against the GameKnot chess-Engine and I consider it to be quite strong and the ELOs underrated. I'm currently rated about 1600 but can't beat the engine's 1600 level and compared to human opponents I consider the lower levels to be very strong, too! How do you guys consider the engine strength? How is the relation between your rating and the engines rating you can beat??

What kind of computer do you have, ortega456? Because the chess engine actually runs on your computer (Java applet), and not on the server, if you have a fast computer, the chess engine will be able to analyze a lot more positions in the allotted time. The engine's rating is just an approximation ("guesstimation") for an average computer with not a lot of memory. easy19, you can find it via "New Game" -> "Play vs Computer" gameknot.com

I'm using an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz T8300 with 2GB of Memory. @easy19 You've got a pretty high rating. How do you consider the engine strength? Can you beat the 2000 or even 2200+ level?? I'm pretty curious

I have set it on Grandmaster and it felt i was playing a positioanl playing 1700 rated player. So easy win! But I have a very slow computer P3 800Mhz 512Mb And still not buying a new one

I have lost to 1000 and beat the 2300. Go figure. The 1000 level is tougher than I would expect from a human of the same rating, but having said that I have seen it miss an easy two-move-mate after I offered a knight, a move a human would be suspicious of. The GM level is good, but with a strong opening (using the DB of course) and an analyse board up, with no time limit, I was able to beat it. I doubt I could beat a human of that rating, my record win is against a 2032 rating. I'm glad GK have added this feature, thanks!

Lol, my computer is pretty fast, I cannot even get a lookin on the 1000 estimated ranking. I am not that good, but not that bad certainly! I wanted to have an easy one, played for about 1 hour, restarting a lot. Didn't come close. I need some practice I think!

Good insight into the Java Applet execution, ortega
That certainly explains it -- I've got a quad core w/ 8 gigs of RAM, and was tearing my hair out trying to beat casual, then beginner, then finally easy.

Opinion
I guess I accidentally deleted the last post. I wanted to say that I think the Gameknot computer player is very weird to the point of being broken. It makes the right move almost every time in my opinion irregardless of what setting you put it on (yes, even the 1000 is a grandmaster). I actually thought the 2200+ was easier the times I played it. I think it should be nerfed somehow.
