hmm interesting topic
ok i definitely agree with you that many time outs are not due to carelessness....but unforeseen reasons like sickness and computer failure. However, many systems have been put in place to help you. You have vacation time and emergency postponement. Secondly, i use to play very seriously, but learned a lesson. That is although fun, chess is still just a game. Don't be consumed by rating, prestige, etc. I did and it ruined my life. I valued chess over all else and it took a computer failure and 450 time outs (i had 450 games over 3 sites) to learn my lesson. Chess is a game. Enjoy it but don't let it consume you. That would be my advice to you.. And get better ok? (: -nathanman22

heinzkat
this guy apparently wants to just rant and is not interested in hearing what we have to say...i say we mod the thread. There's no point in ridiculous ranting without hearing out logical solutions.

Responsibility
king....you avoid your responsibility to use features available to prevent time outs while blaming everything else for what happened...it's gameknot's fault for having extra features...no, you chose to go there...gameknot doesn't force you to....it's other people's fault for moving too slow .....use what you have and stop ranting nonsensically in the forums.

With the Rapture approaching I figured why bother postponing my games, as it all seemed rather pointless. But much to my disappointment it's now Sunday and it looks like I'd better hurry up and move!

methinks thekingni has been bored of late and has found an interesting method of self-amusement.

Slack button
Some firm rules (whatever they be) are necessary to avoid one person being treated differently than another. We may not like those rules, but at least we're all treated the same. But sometimes being treated the same gets confused with fairness (e.g. if I steal a loaf of bread my arm gets cut off, and if you steal a loaf you will lose your arm).

In my advanced years I am beginning to appreciate the beauty of slack (or some call it grace), where if someone cuts me off on the road I oblige him knowing that someday I also will receive slack. When I see an opponent about to time-out I will sometimes postpone my own games hoping that he returns in time to continue.

What if a SLACK BUTTON (or a grace button) were added to GK where if one chose he could give his opponent additional time to move? This has been discussed before and if I remember the concern was that if a player didn't give his opponent some slack then his opponent would later accuse him of being an a-hole for not doing so. This is why we cut off people's arms for stealing bread!

Yes O Yes for a cutting-him (or her)-some-slack button
As Eddie Gufeld says,

Playing against certain, strong, inspired competitors,

<< "you always get a charge of creative energy, trying to be a worthy opponent yourself -- no, not an opponent, but a partner -- in creating a chess masterpiece. You put more, much more fantasy and imagination into such games." >>

Have had the experience here where I am playing book and trying out theoretical novelties of world top-20 supergrandmasters, when my gameKnot opponent comes up with a better move than theirs. . . and then a few moves later. . . times out. Losing his brilliancy.

Where is the justice in that? Where is the advancement of our chess knowledge?

After trying to get GameKnot to reverse the time-out, I then reinstate such a game -- but consider it un-just that my opponent would lose such a brilliant game in the first place.

I have also had instance where I lost a whole bucnh of games due to a computer crash where I had no internet access for sevral weeks. I was a real annoyance because it affectedmy rating and of the 22 games I have lost during my time on gameKnot, 13 of them have een due to those few weeks. not only that but I was either beating or at least equal to a much higher opponent and was about to win against an eight hundred something. Now it's going to take a quite a few games for me to figure out where abouts my rating should really be.

I understand that these things happen and not much can be done about it but one thing I have thought is prehaps games shouldn't count if many are lost at once?

If you are referring to the period of the 7th/8th of December last year, 6 of those games were
short and your rating wasn't affected.

I think you came out of it fairly well!

Just continue to play good chess and you will soon be up where you belong.

All the best.

"I understand that these things happen and not much can be done about it but one thing I have thought is prehaps games shouldn't count if many are lost at once? "

Well, there are 2 points I have here:

1) That would be way too open to abuse. If a player was about to lose a game, he could just time out of all his games to avoid losing any rating points.

2) There is now the rating floor to prevent you from falling too far in cases like this.
