Homework
As I know which I do with students, a lot, one important thing in chess is Homework. I do a lot of HW, these days, and it ranges from reading charleshiggie's annotations to visulaizing positions and variations. But, in doing so, you get a mental workout which in turn, helps improves ones chess. In fact, the most difficult Homework I've ever done was studying the games between GM's Karpov and Susan Polgar where Susan won. And, then, I annotated that. I do a lot of studying, which is healthy for the mind because, doing this, also helps me at work and in Spin Class.

Perhaps you mean Judit Polgar. There are no Susan Polgar versus Karpov games at chessgames.com. Happy Holidays.

Thanks, you to. This was the game where they competed, and Susan won. gameknot.com

In fact, come to think of it, the main Homework I do, believe it or not, is spin class, these days. This is also the main sport I compare with chess. It's because, on top of a few other things, in addition to work, this is one of the main things that have helped me improve my chess. In fact, it's one of the main ways that I've surpassed a 1300 rating. Might seem ironic, but it's complex. For example, in a couple of games with my students, after making a blunder that overlooked a Q capture (which lost my Queen), followed by a different where I missed an attacked piece. I still won the game and made things difficult. But, I visualized the position and what had to be done during the class. Well before that, I noticed the difference starting with what I did. It took me back to when the first mentoring session on this website occurred. That is, in the first few years with Jack, but when I was first mentored, with real encouragement on this website which happened years later. And some of what we discussed which were the threats and attacked piece. So, basics in order to learn the fundamentals of spin since this appeared just as difficult. Therefore, I brainstormed and made things difficult. The next were those Q sacs from TA and a blunder in the epic and historic game with Jack. Then came the pinning motif by the same coach. Most recently was the recent loss against the same person that trained me about the other things discussed here who I then became friends since it was a mistake that a more experienced player would not have made. But, one of the ways that I slowly progressed was through spin. And, likewise, when we're in a difficult position and am in trouble, I think about what I had to go through during spin class. Therefore, the new and one of the main Homework assignments for chess is going to spin 2-4 times a month.

I'm also going away, in less then a month. In the past, all chess Homework, would, temporarely end, while away. Not this time. While on the plane, I will do more HW by studying more of, "Chess Tactics for Champions", by GM Susan Polgar.

Here's an in addition, in addition to that book, if the airline has a computer where you can play chess, I will do. And, as Homework, it will be on the most difficult level possible since there's much to learn. If both happen, that will bring me to two HW assignments in a day which is a record. Yes, I often give myself assignments, similar to how it was when I became well known for training players. But, I have not done two in the same before. However, that is a possibility in this context. Only time will tell.

No need to fly first, as today was the first time I did two Homework assignment in a single day, with chess. This was by the legendary, Jack Stockel. The first one was easy, and like what I saw with ...Re1 being the solution as it lead to a draw, this was also a position based on a GM game. It shows that the best players can make terrible mistakes that you generally don't see from experienced players. As the first Homework, he had me figure out why a move lost. But, I figured out, this time, that black would lose a piece. After one spot, it'd have no place to go. The second, was not only much tougher, but it was the third most difficult HW I've done. There's a game that I won due to a mistake that someone made, and I coached him a little. But, he's much stronger then anyone I've coached, so it was little to none, in reality. Jack showed why it lost, and I pretty much said the same thing. But, then, he made us continue. However, he took over. So, I played as white, which is how it started, but he continued playing as the student in a similar way that we saw, when easy19 continued that game with Jack Stockel with him as my pieces and me as Jack. On the other hand, the colors did not change when he continued, but he played the student's pieces. With the right move. So, it continued, and sure enough, I made a blunder that would've lost. Interestingly enough, it was the newbie's instinct, anyhow, and he had a hard time deciding between the move that lost and the best one. Was it not for the mistake, we both agree, that he might have won.

Ok, there was no computer to play chess with on the airline I was on. The only one that I know that does this is Jet Blue. Aside from a GM annotation and Spin Class, all Homework is done until the Farewell Season of American Idol is finished. After that, I'll be doing a lot more, and the assignments will be more difficult, like how they were before.
