My first tournament :D
I'm playing in my first tournament since i was about 12 today! I'm very excited, but fully expecting to get neutered. It's just a little one at the university chess club, should be good fun. I'll report back later if anyone's interested.

Yes I'm interested!
There are psychology contents in playing and mastering chess, especially in OTB. Hope you'll notice and try to get over it

Extreem one: when you sense a hole in your opponent move, you rush to execute what you think is a blunder, just to show your opponent that YOU KNOW. Your opponent might set you a trap and put a sad expression as if it was an unintentional blunder.

Good Luck & Best Skill to you for your event... Some thoughts/reminders
Things to Remember:
1. Punch your clock~!
2. Literally "sit upon your hands" if you have any tendency to touch pieces hastily ... It will be "Touch Move" Rule there.
3. You Do Not have to "beat" your opponent. They must "beat" You~! And no matter how highly rated they are, you cannot be defeated if each move you make is a Good-One. (Add in some "Great-Ones" and you probably win.)
4. Scan the Rules before play to refresh yourself on them; and don't forget you can consult the TD during play if you have a Rules Question.
5. Always "check for checks".

6. Getting Mated can be avoided if you look on each turn and take note of each opponent piece that can come within two-squares of your King in one move; then those that can do so in Two-moves. That pretty much reveals any forthcoming Mate potential.
7. Always look a move or two Beyond any Capture, even if it gains material, to avoid falling into a trap.
8. Spend a bit of extra time on each move of: The King, The Queen, A Center Pawn, Any pawn in front of your King position.
9. Glancing at the opponent's eyes can often tell you what they are thinking. It worked for TAL.
10. If opponent makes a hard, sudden move especially a capture you can retake ...don't react in similar fashion. They are probably trying to get you to overlook a strong zwishen-zug reply. Or simply to psych you, or try to make you reply quickly in hope you will blunder. [I had it done to me before. ONCE ]
11. Any alteration of the Rules of play being made for that tournament must be posted in writing prior to commencement of Round #1. Be sure to take note of any such changes posted, so you do not get caught by one.
12. Never make 'just one more quick move' right before needing a Rest Room or smoke break ~! I can assure you, it feels Very Foolish to lose a game in that manner . . . }8-[

It went pretty well...
I won 3 and lost 2; It was all pretty casual there were about 20 people there. But it's still a totally different atmosphere than chilling at home playing on gameknot. It was 10 minute time controls for starters and i was incredibly fidgety; probably didnt help that i downed a redbull beforehand in hopes of enhancing my performance. The two that i lost were both the result of silly mistakes, i dropped a knight early on in the first and it was all over from there. I was in a good position in the the other loss but then stumbled into a mating trap. I definitely think there's room for improvement, i just need to get used to playing at speed.
