Chess where you least expect it . . .
Or about encountering Chess-related things out in the big, wide world ... (when not in a strictly Chess setting such as a club or tmt is).

My find of the day ...
is that Bic company now makes a lighter that has a paper wrap around on it, of a Black Chess King.

I think someone mentioned this before. Earlier in the week I saw an episode of the doctor show called "House" which had a young Chess player as the star-patient.

Quite some years now, there was the musical called Chess. I never got to see that. Did you? Was it good?

Re the steinschaching: They forgot the final law of advertising with Chess theme ....someone absolutely Must make comment about "check", "mate" or some opening, that is Completely unrelated to the position. Preference to the "Sicilian" or "some-Gambit" !

For "Chess" musical, check out . . .
. . . the DVD of the 2008 Concert at Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic, Josh Groban as Anatoli, Adam Pechtel as Freddie, etc. Some great performances of the outstanding Tim Rice/Benny and Bjorn from ABBA score. Minimal staging (since it was a two-performance-ony benefit) but Tim Rice hopefully calls this "the definitive version" of the musical (since back in the original London/Broadway/Sweden funs they kept changing material, including the plot). I do prefer this ending, where Freddie begins to redeem himself by helping Anatoli prepare a variation against Vigand's KID for the final game. If you are too poor/cheap to buy the DVD, you can see some of the rehearsals and pirated versions on Youtube. Susan Boyle fans will also want to visit Youtube to check out the December BBC production where she finally got to sing with her idol, Elaine Paige. And what did they sing? The soprano duet "I Know Him So Well" from "Chess"! Elaine was the original Florence to Murray Head's Freddie. And if you don't know who Elaine and Murray are, you have been absent from the musical theatre scene at least since the 1960's!

Anyone heard of Kasparov against the world?
I was totally surprised. The book titled Reinventing Discovery has a big chess example, describing how Kasparov played against the internet in 1998 or thereabouts. The internet was used to collect votes for each opposing move. K won.
