what????
one of the player's in my tournament group did not make moves in time and his games timed out against another opponent, but not the games against me...out of nowhere his games against me go from having 1 hour remaining, to having a day to make a move.

what's the rule for timeouts??? this is absolutely ridiculous.

On weekends a day is normally added to every-body's time. This happens because many people don't have the opportunity to play over the weekend. The idea is to prevent large numbers of time outs. Time outs are generally perceived as a bad thing, not something to look forward to.

In your situation, the guy timed out against another opponent before the 24 hours was added to his time allowance. Your game didn't time out because it was suddenly added.

My advice is to not count on any time outs period...ever. If it happens, it happens. It may seem unfair at times, but the rules at GK draw a necessary line for time controls. Sometimes we stand on the wrong side of that line. We simply have to accept it.

Your situation as happened to me plenty of times. Don't think you are alone.

yeah i wouldn't want all my games to time out at the same time either, but my fair assumption is that 2 days is 2 days. you either make your move, or you lose. i know that sounds cutthroat, but that's the rules right?

so apparently, i was just on the wrong side of a very THIN line.

anyway, play on, i realize it's just a game, and thanks for the explanation.

"but my fair assumption is that 2 days is 2 days. you either make your move, or you lose. i know that sounds cutthroat, but that's the rules right?"

Unfortunately it's not a fair assumption if it is in the FAQs. Everyone should be familar with the FAQ, it's there for that reason:

Q4: It seems extra time was added to a game and my opponent hasn't moved yet. Why?
A: 24 hours are automatically added to all non-postponed games (but not to exceed the original time control) every Saturday between 5-6pm local GK time (PST) to prevent timeouts over the weekend for people who play from work/school and don't have computers at home. It is designed to ensure that if you make your move on Friday, you should have until the same time on Monday to make your next move.

Also, extra time can be added to all games during the major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years) or any other extraordinary events (such as natural disasters, etc.) affecting the majority of players on GameKnot.

Please don't rely on the extra time being added for you and always postpone your games manually using the link located directly below your active games list, if you need more time to make your next moves.

well ladi-frickin-dah
guess my opponent hit the lottery between the golden (state) hour of "5-6pm PST"...which was "MAGICALLY" AFTER HIS GAMES HAD TIMED OUT AGAINST THE OTHER OPPONENT IN THE TOURNAMENT GROUP.

hey matt i know you're good at copying/pasting, but how good are you at reading onward?

as i had said: "so apparently, i was just on the wrong side of a very THIN line. anyway, play on, i realize it's just a game, and thanks for the explanation."

but now that you've laid out the official FAQ, i bring up another point: it seems to me that people would be able to abuse this apparent freebie to just get an extra day to think about their next move. but what do i know, i finished college six years ago, and i make my moves from work and home...even weekends!...whaddya know?!

It appears you made your last move (minutes? hours?) later than the "lucky guy" that won on time, that's my explanation. Good luck and crush him (her?) on the board.

I use the extra day over the weekend to take Sunday off from chess. I can go to bed on Saturday evening, come back Monday morning, and I've lost eight hours or so. I even try to ensure it's my move on the Saturday evening so it's me that gets the extra day, not my opponent! Haha! I'm sure that's flawed logic, but really I just like to start a new week fresh.

I wouldn't care about him timing out of other games but not mine. Whatever, I want to play chess, not magically win games without even moving.
