Apologies
Here's a game I should have won, but I got careless in the ending.

Taranto (2242)-Loren 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.Nf3 g6 5.Qc2 Bg7 6.e4 O-O 7.cxb5 a6 8.Nc3 Bb7 9.Be3 (Interesting move, leaving my database.) d6 10.h3!? (Obviously to prevent Ng4, but this is probably too slow. Now Black is = IMHO.) Qa5 11.Bd2 axb5 12.Nxb5 Qa4!!? (Qb6 leads to a typical equal Benko middlegame where I could try to win in the "normal" ways. This is "brilliant" but more forcing and hence gives him few chances to go wrong for awhile.) 13.Bd3 Nxe4 14.b3 (Otherwise Black just wins material.) Qa6 15.Nc3 Nxd2 (The point of the combination: Black will have 2 Bs for the Q and LOTS of weak squares to attack.) 16.Bxa6 Nxf3+ 17.gxf3 Nxa6! (Winning the dP.) 18.O-O Nb4 19.Qd2 Bd4 20.f4 Nxd5 21.Nxd5 Bxd5 22.Rad1 Ra7 23.Qe2 Be6 24.h4 h5 25.Kh2 Rfa8 26.Rg1!? (White seeks to bail out into a slightly worse but probably defensible ending.) Rxa2 27.Rxg6+ Kf8! (Regaining the Q.) 28.Rxe6 Rxe2 29.Rxe2 Rb8 (White is still "up" in material but has no chance to win and has to play carefully to draw.) 30.Rd3 Ke8 31.Kg2 Kd7 32.Ra2 Bf6 33.Rd5?? (Very bad idea. If he just grovels and defends, Black will find it hard to win. He creates a passed P, but Black gets a herd of them!) Rxb3 34.Rxh5 Kc6 35.Rh7 Kd5 36.h5 c4 37.Rxf7 Rb8! (The key move. Now the Rf7 is out of the game and it's K and Ps on the march!) 38.Kf3 c3 39.Ke3 Kc4 40.h6 d5 41.Ra4+ Kb3 42.Ra1 (The critical moment of stupidity. I had previously analyzed d4+ 43.Kd3/e2 with a tempo ahead of the game because the WK takes 2 moves to get to d2. Kb2 probably wins as well. But I suddenly thought I saw a "faster" win, completely overlooking White's 48th move, which is not possible a tempo behind after the CORRECT d4+.) c2?? 43.Rxf6 exf6 44.Kd2 Rc8 45.h7 (Getting this extra move in makes a BIG difference since it can deflect the BR at key moments.) d4 46.Rc1 d3 47.Kxd3 f5 48.Kd4 (Of course--as I said above, I completely missed that this was possible. Without the extra tempo, it isn't. Now White can eke out a draw.) Re8 49.Rg1 Rh8 50.Ke5 Rxh7 51.Kxf5 Kb2 1/2-1/2.

My prettiest game, and I blew it *sad face*!

The best is ahead.

Interesting analysis. Surely I'd need to play many games in such defenses to guess as well as you do it the development of the middle game. Whenever I tried I felt very uncomfortable with them.

In any case, except that small slip at the end of the game, well played.

Thanks Soren
Analyzing the eight games in progress, unless a catastrophic mistake, I'm pretty sure I can not lose any, and half of them I have some chance of victory.
Because that I can assure for the team at least 7 of the 12 points in the first board, although I think we need 7,5 per board to get the second place.
Best wishes.

Great Technique, Carlos!
Well done, sir! I also expect to get a plus score. I am clearly losing one game and have a somewhat worse position in a complicated game that I could lose. I believe that the rest would require a catastrophic error to lose, just like Carlos said. Of those 8, I have a winning edge or material advantage in 5 and some winning chances in at least one of the other 3, so I should get at least 7 or 7.5 and am hoping for 8 or (with luck) a bit more.

Just pray I don't play any more dumb moves to throw away a win like vs. Taranto!

Highest regards,
Loren

Keep Up the Good Work, Men!!
Our tournament position still looks promising, as only the Russian teams and ourselves seem to be headed towards plus scores at the moment. So if Carlos and Soren can win their won positions and I can break into the win column, we will have an excellent shot at 2nd place.
