I had prepared an improvement in the endgame of one of the "stem" games from here that I think wins by force, but he varied first. Everyone avoided the move Robert played [probably because it concedes that Black will at best draw, since White at least has a forced repetition or can go into a P+ ending]. However, I was not able to find a line that won by force despite spending quite a bit of time here.) Qc7!? 27.Kf1!? (Trappy, since I could not find a convincing win.) Kc8 (Forced.) 28.Qe4 Kb8 29.Qd3 Rh5! (Again the only move.) 30.Qd8+ Qc8 31.Rd7 Rf5+ 32.Kg2 Rxf6 33.Qxc8+ Kxc8 34.Rxa7 Kd8 35.Ra8+ Ke7 36.Rb8 Bh6 37.Nc5 Rf5 38.Ne4 Rd5 39.Rxb4 f5 40.Rb7+ Kd8 41.Nc3 (Nf2 also seems to allow a draw.) Rd2+ 42.Kf1 Be3 43.Ne2 e5 44.Rb5 Rd1+ 45.Kg2 Rd2 46.Kf3 Rd3! (B retreats give White good chances to cash in the P, but staying alert and/or armed with a good endgame book or program, Black proves that the reduced material allows a forced draw.) 47.Kg2 (Nc3 Bc1!=) Rd2 48.Rxe5 Rxe2+ 49.Kf3 Rxh2 50.Kxe3 Rxb2 51.Rxf5 Rg2 52.Kf3 Rh2 (Only move.) 53.Re5 Rh8 (Only move.) 54.g4 Re8! (Only move.) 55.Rxe8+ = Black has the distant opposition. If White had let Black play Ke7 in the last 5 moves instead, that is a simple draw. 1/2-1/2

I fought to the bitter end but no avail--my opponent found every "must" move.

(A little finesse idea. Usually White plays Rc1 Bd7 and THEN Nxf6. My idea is to reserve the R move and not let the B defend the b5 P right away) exf6!? (If Bxf6, I would probably revert to main line with Rc1 Bd7 g4! when White has a slight edge. exf6 arose to avoid that line, but now we're on our own since I don't need to play Rc1.) 13.Nc3 b4 14.Nd5 Ne7 15.Nxb4 f5! (Else Black has no compensation for the P.) 16.Bg5 f6 17.Bc4+ Kh7 18.Bf4 fxe4 19.O-O! (fxe4 Bb7! and Black has good compensation.) d5 (The center looks imposing, but it can't advance effectively, and in the meantime, the aP CAN advance and the Black cP is a target.) 20.Be2 Rb7 21.a4 f5 22.Rac1 Rf6 23.Na6 Rfb6 24.Nc5 Rb8 (Rxb2 Nxb7) 25.Bb5 Nc6 26.Bxc6 Rxb2 (Black has no choice since if Rxc6, Nxe4!) 27.Qe3 R8b6 28.Bb5 c6 29.fxe4!! (Seeing through to 32.Nf3 in the game line and offering the Q, which Black declines.) dxe4 30.Nxe4! R6xb5 (If now Bxd4, 31.Ng5+ Kg8 32.Rfd1! Bxe3+ 33.Bxe3 and Black is helpless against various threats to the Q and mate.) 31.Ng5+ Kg8 32.Nf3! (Protects everything. So Black has regained his material, but now all the threats are White's.) R5b3 33.Rc3 Rxc3 34.Qxc3 Re2 35.Rb1! (The 8th rank is very weak.) Qd5 36.Rb8 Re8 37.a5 Qe6 38.Rb6 Bd7 39.a6 (Black must lose much material to stop the aP.) 1-0.

Thanks Loren:
for your complete analysis and congratulations for your last game but ended up tied, you fought it until the end.

My remaining five games are at a turning point: In four of them I have significant advantage but not enough to secure victory. The fifth game is drawn.

I am weighing every move very carefully since these points can be decisive for finishing second.

My
remaining 2 games will give us a minimum of 1,5 points. My game against the Russian player is the most exciting and very difficult to make 1 full point out of, as usual with Rookendings, which very often are quite drawish. However I'm trying hard to get the full point and off course I will also be careful not to overdue anything! The other game against the Spanish player has been won for very long time and perhaps he will loose on time finally. I have no idea why he play on in the game, but that is his choice.
I think the keygames and by that our road to the second place, will be Hans's remaining games at the 3rd board. I don't know the exact position in all the games, since they are delayed with up til 5 moves and so far I have not heard anything from Hans!

Best of luck to you all in your remaining games!

Team Pattern?
They seem to have a strategy of letting all of their games go down to the last day. My opponent from that team has twice let our game go down to his last 24 hours for multiple moves and he timed out against two other players in our section. I think I am nearing a winning advantage in that game but after my most recent bad move from last month in another game, which may have cost me a half point (win to draw, though I'm still trying to win it), I will not count my chickens too soon!

In any case, another lovely thematic win by Soren--a skull neatly crushed!

Update
Here's a summary of "likely" results:

One game totally lost--will resign soon.
One game winning--hope I don't do something stupid as my opponent plays delay tactics.
One game likely drawn (that I was winning till I did something stupid several moves/months ago), but I will keep fighting for winning chances since I do not have real losing chances.
One game likely losing but not completely clear (I'd say 67% chance loss/33% chance draw, so do not count on that half point!).
One game equal in middle game.

I should therefore get 2/5 with the chance of maybe squeezing another half point out of the last three games with a little luck/skill.

As of 5 moves ago, all of you (including Hans) seem to be doing well in your remaining games, so we should end up with more than our current +9 even if I only get 2/5 (-1) the rest of the way. Keep up the good play, team!

Hans/Loren(Soren
Congratulations, Hans for your maiden win in this season.
Playing carefully Hans must not loose in his games ongoing, although all game seems draws.

Loren: Your game vs Russian best team maybe the key of our final result. I agree with your
percetage posssibilities about it. Perhaps you must think keep both rooks in the endgame. With
one rook only the game will be very difficault.

Myself: In my own games I have four games in advantage but I don't know if some of them will
finish in a victory. I am going to fight hardly until the end. The last game is absolutely draw.

Finaly Soren is hardly fighting to win the last game but probably will be draw.

Then: I think we have assured 7,5 points out of 16 games remaining for finishing 28,5 points.
That not will be enough because the Loren's lost game is vs Metel2 our main opponent for the
second place. Then we should half a point more than us with the same games finished.

Al means we have to take 29,5 points for getting possibilities to be second. I'd have to win
one/two games more and Loren try to finish draw in the game vs Dnojoj or win one of his
balanced games remaining.

Well, FIGHTING UNTIL THE END AND OF COURSE AVOID MISTAKES AND TIMEOUTS.

Carlos

Two Other Points
1. Don't forget the Argentinans!! They are only +1 but they have MANY games to finish and they are the highest rated.

2. Looking at the other Group C sections, the 3rd place team in our section might have a good chance to get promoted if they advance any of the top 3rd places (as they did last time). B Group will drop 32 teams (lowest 8 in each section) and add 8 teams (lowest 8 in A Group). So they will need 24. 10 Group C x 2 = 20, so they may take 4 3rd place teams from C?

But we do not want to count on that, so let's get those points!

Loren:
Your opinion may be true for the Argentine team, but I think they are too far away.

As far as we are concerned my game against my argentinian opponent can not move from tie
in a final set of P + Q + K vs. Q + K with the pawn advantage for me playing with black and I
am going to be 'Capablanca in Cuba' and win the game. In the outstanding game with Hans
Argentina may have some positional advantage but the game seems to draw.
If they can do damage against Metel2 also have 2 games in progress, but also have the 4
games remaining against Djovoj and those are tough games where surely tie overall.

In any case we must fight for second place and that we ensure the worst case scenario is one
of the best third.

Finally, I have the feeling that in your match against Spanish opponent racing the clock,
you've opted to go for the win neglecting a slight edge in the last 10 moves I can see. It now
appears clearly drawn, but I hope you get find your way.

Going for it.

Carlos

Which Spanish Opponent?
Jimena Bonilla is a clear win unless I make a blunder. I went from "clear advantage" to "clear win" during his last time pressure (when he had 1 day per move for 5 moves).

Garcia Ramirez WAS a clear win until around move 44 (now it is move 46, so you haven't seen this even though I have told you about it). After playing the opening very fast and getting a lost game, he started taking 20 to 25 days per move for month after month (at one point, we both had over 200 days; now he has 50). I let myself lose track of the game, a result of not being used to MULTIPLE month-long breaks between moves. I was analyzing a position a move ahead of the game (since his reply was forced) and then just went brain dead and made the NEXT move instead of the FIRST one. Now he is moving fast again, so clearly he was just hoping that I would die or blunder from boredom. As a new strategy, I'm writing down my analysis in ChessBase first and then double-checking it before I move, so I hope that I will not do that again. I am still trying to win the game because it is not a simple draw, but unless he makes a mistake, it will be a draw.

Soren was referring to this game when (in his post above) he mentioned that I should not let myself get frustrated and impatient again! I am trying not to!!

Sorry, I was taking about the game vs Jimena Bonillo. I only can see until the move 37. Just in
this moment seems a draw. I suppose that in the five moves that I can't see you have the clear
win about you speak.

The game vs Ramirez you had a clear advantage in the move 41, until where I can see. I
suppose that in the move 44th the situation will have changed.

Sorry again.

No Problem, Carlos!
I just wish I still had BOTH wins *sigh*! You are probably looking at the place vs. Jimena Bonillo where I successfully walked my K out past his R on the 2nd rank. He does not have a forced draw there because of some little tricks, one of which he fell into (I got to play e5! and end up with a powerful passed P on either e6 or f6). He could have played better, in which case I would be in a R + P ending with an extra P, which as usual would not have been an easy win, just an advantage to try to convert. Unfortunately, in the Garcia Ramirez game, my mistake will leave me with no advantage but with 2 B's and 3 P's vs. R, N , and 1 P. I can hope for a tactic with the 2 B's or poor endgame play that lets me advance one of my passed P's (unfortunately not connected).

The One I Have Been Losing Since the Opening
Kazantsev (2339)-Loren 1.Nf3 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 c5 4.e4 Qa5+ 5.Bd2 Qb6 6.Bc3 Nc6 7.dxc5 Bxc3+ 8.Nxc3 Qxb2 9.Nd5 Nf6!? (The main line is Kf8 when Black's position is playable but Black HAD done well with this move recently.) 10.Bd3 O-O?! (If I had this to play again, I would try IM Tate's Nxd5 11.cxd5 Qc3+ 12.Ke2 Nd4 instead of this natural move.) 11.O-O Qa3 12.Rb1! (Oh-oh. Black drew easily in all the games in my database, but nobody tried this logical idea. The novelty looked worse and worse for me everytime I analyzed. Black won't be able to return the Q to a5.) Ne8 (Qxc5 13.Rb5 Qd6 14.e5! Nxe5 15.Nxe5 Qxe5 16.Nb6 wins.) 13.e5 e6 14.Qd2! (Now Black must watch out for Qh6 and Ng5.) exd5 15.cxd5 Nxe5 16.Nxe5 (Rybka takes about ten minutes here to give White a big advantage by seeing what's coming.) Qxc5 17.Rfe1 (Black needs to find an improvement somewhere in the last five or six moves or this variation just loses. I saw the coming sac at this point but could not find any way to avoid it without losing in more obvious ways.) Nf6 18.Rb5 Qc7 19.Bxg6! fxg6 20.d6 Qd8 21.Nxg6 hxg6 22.Qh6 Kf7 23.Rbe5 Re8 24.Rxe8 Qxe8 25.Rxe8 Nxe8 (All forced and obvious since move 19. Black has enough material for the moment, but his lack of development means that White's passed P's will win the day before Black can get his minor pieces moving.) 26.Qf4+ Nf6 27.g4 Ke6 28.h4 b5 29.g5 Nd5 30.Qe4+ Kxd6 31.Qxg6+ Kc5!? (Ke5 puts up more resistance but Black loses in either case.) 32.h5 Bb7 33.Qe4 Bc6 34.h6 Nc3 (Rf8 is a move too slow, too.) 35.Qe5+ Kc4 36.h7 Be4 37.h8=Q (Now Black can resign whenever he wants to.) Rxh8 38.Qxh8 Nxa2 39.Qh4 Kd3 40.g6 Bd5 41.f4 b4 42.f5 b3 43.Qf2 Kc3 44.f6 b2 45.Qe1+ Kc2 46.f7 b1=Q 47.Qxb1+ Kxb1 48.f8=Q 1-0.

Rb1! is a big improvement in this line, but I did not meet it well, either. If I were Rybka, I might have seen Bxg6 a couple of moves sooner--by the time I saw it, it was too late to avoid it.

He does not deserve much comment this game. I chose a QID to have any chance of victory

deserves no further comment.
