It had to be this of the f-pawn. Had the g-pawn advanced, Black would have had a target to hit.

But why 33.Rd2? Far more to the point was 33.Rd4, threatening (with due preparation) to swing over to one of the flanks. If Black plays at once 33...Rb6, then 34.Rxd5 Rxb2 35.Rxf5ch Ke6 36.Kg4 followed by 37.Rf3 consolidates a clear advantage. Black does better with 33...Ke6 34.Ke3 Rb6 35.Rd2. This looks as though White might as well have played 33.Rd2 all along, but now the d4-square will be home for the King, after which he can decide upon how to make further progress.

Agreed, another example of too much passivity. I did not seem to have a clear plan in mind, thinking black was weaker than he was.

Don't forget the King! For the time being I would have preferred to keep the rook on the b-file, having a plan in mind that is not quite realisable right now (38.Rb5? d4! would have been good for Black). But after 38.Ke3 Ke5 39.f4ch Ke6 40.Kd4 Rc6 41.b3! White's game is looking pretty good: (41...Rc2?? 42.Rxb6ch ... 43.Kxd5 etc).

But if white plays a5, then: bxa5 bxa5 Rxg2 wins pawn. Unless I'm not seeing something (which I often do)  

After 40.a5, Black can get away with snatching the g-pawn at once. I think White's last realisable winning chances disappeared with his 38th move (38.Rd4 instead of 38.Ke3). A mistake by either side could still tip the scales, but Black's active rook is making up for his pawns' weaknesses.

strepsil: that looks extremely dangerous. 40. a5 bxa5 41. bxa5 Rxg2 42. Ra4 d4 43. a6 d3 47. a7 d2 48. a8Q d1Q 49. Ra6+ Ke7 50. Qa7+ Qd7 51. Qe3+ Kf8 52. Ra8+ Kg7 53. Qe5+ Kg6 (Kh7 54. Rh8#) 54. Rg8+ picks up the enemy rook and leaves Black's king in peril.

In my view, it is Black who has the better winning chances right now, however slender these are. There is nowhere white can break through, but Black's passed pawn could very easily become a menace, if White gets careless...

Actually, 54.Kd2 in the line given in the note to the previous move transposes into something like the game continuation: 53...Rg3ch 54.Kd2 Ra3 55.Rc7ch Kb4 56.Rc6. Black would have had 55...Kd4 available, but White is fine: 56.Rc6 Ra2ch 57.Kc1! Rxa4 58.Rxb6 and the ending is a comfortable draw: 58...Kc5 59.Rb8 Rb4 60.b6 Rxb6 61.Rxb6 Kxb6 62.Kd2 for a 'book draw' pawn ending.

No. White's good here. This is just as per my comment at move 54.

It actually doesn't make much difference. The move played draws; 60.Kc3 draws; even 60.b6 draws. After 60.b6 Black can never get rid of the pawn without the rooks going too, whereat the pawn ending is a dead draw; ad it seems very unlikely that he can ignore the threats in his rear by conducting an all out attack on the White King.

The GK computer is wrong here. After 60.Kd3 Rb3+ 61.Kc2 Rxb5 black can simply exchange rooks and the pawn ending after 62.Rxb5+ Kxb5 63.Kd3 Kc5 64.Kc3 is a draw.

Good idea - it is essential to know when it is a draw or a loss with that pawn minus. One thing to bear in mind is that in this position, black has not managed to get his king in front of his pawn. If he had you would not have stood a chance!

'The Opposition' - maintaining the King along the same line - rank, file or diagonal (here, file) with an odd number of squares between. A disadvantage to whose move it is (here White's). I gather the Opposition is really just a part of what the Soviet School used to call the theory of 'Corresponding Squares'.

Actually, any of the 5 moves available to White led to a draw. Having said that, this or 65.Kd2 are the ones I would recommend.
