Four Queens don't usually last long. Somewhere in my archives I have a fun 'multiple promotions' game - ah yes: Suetin-Gufeld, Tiflis, 1969-70. There were four promotions to Queen, three of them in the e-file. It was not a 'multiple Queens' game, though...

Material level, but White driven back into a corner. Not a good augury!

White's centre pawns can't survive long, by the look! Black's reply to this places White in a zugzwang: the pieces vanish (not quite the wholesale massacre on g2 I had envisaged, but it'll do!), and then ...Kf4. White can do nothing about that programme.

The point seems to lay in the way white managed the simplification that lead to this bind. It had to be foreseen at some point that a side-effect of the simplification line "a" was that white would have been binded at g2. I don't have time to go now through the past moves, but again Bf1 rings a bell to me. Mind from there, white has Qe2 at some point, controlling e5 and preventing most of black's threats.

It couldn't be helped. Squashed up in the corner like that left White almost no moves at all.

Now the edge is clear due to a single tempo: the one white needed to play Kc3 and prevent - for short - black's K incursion in h4.

It would be almost impossible for Black to mess up this position, Charles. A fine game, though - one that teetered on a razor's edge.

A most interesting game. It's true that I saw an edge to black in the midgame that came to nothing at the end of it - white superbly managed the situation and got initiative, too - but the intriguing "why white lost" answer may lay in a different management of the simplification and/or the defence of WK's position against the delicate join of Q and B, if focused on g2. I'm not able to provide an improvement for white (except Bf1 at some point). As for the annotation: sometime I wonder if some line is not commented in the annotation because is too obvious or because it was not considered. I tend to like comments that explain the "why" behind the moves - the not done ones that may look somehow natural, specially. Said that, this was a most enjoyable and complete annotation, I like it 5 stars!

Really appreciated this game, especially since basic end game is a weak part of my game...even though four queens were flying about, in the end it was a simple calculation of where the black King would be able to end up when the smoke cleared that made the difference...excellent illustration!
