While I mostly know Ben Webster (tenor sax) from his collaboration with Art Tatum (piano) on the Tatum Group Masteries, this is a nice tune I had never heard before. victoriasas 09-Jul-25, 19:56	The only thing I really know about Tavares is they did a version of “More Than a Woman,” a disco song more associated with the Bee Gees… More Than a Woman (1977) Tavares youtu.be This is the version by the Bee Gees from the soundtrack of the movie “Saturday Night Fever…” youtu.be I think the falsetto singing of the Bee Gees works well on this song.

Never saw “Grease” either, which I think is from the same timeframe and another music-oriented movie that featured John Travolta. victoriasas 11-Jul-25, 14:59	@amacivn That’s a good tune, but I’m partial to “Native New Yorker.” It’s interesting how different the members of Odyssey look just five years later. The woman in red looks similar, but the other two look totally different. Just a passing (and quick) story… A teacher at my high school was throwing a party and heard I liked jazz so he asked friends of mine to loan him some albums for the party. I was very much into Art Tatum at the time so gave my friends a lot of Art Tatum records and some Oscar Peterson records. I heard from my friends a few days later that no one at the party liked Art Tatum and it created quite a problem, but they loved Oscar Peterson’s “A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra,” which is a great album I gave them (and which I posted in a previous music thread on here.) I really didn’t like Art Tatum the first time I heard him either, which goes to show a lot of music is an acquired taste. But I liked this Art Tatum song nearly right off the bat… “You're Mine You” youtu.be Video is 6:59 I eventually grew to like this rendition so much that if I arrived at a job I worked before the song was over, I’d sit in my car to hear the end of it (on cassette) before I went in to work. Didn’t really care if I was a few minutes late for work.

victoriasas 02-Aug-25, 17:47	Talked with a guy today who was listening to jazz and gave him the names of my three favorite jazz pianists… Art Tatum (1909-1953) Sample tracks: “Talk of the Town” youtu.be “I Surrender Dear” youtu.be Erroll Garner (1921-1977) Sample tracks: “Where or When” (blistering pace, especially at the end) youtu.be “Dancing in the Dark” (have loved this rendition for decades, especially the part from 1:06 on) youtu.be Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) Sample tracks: “That’s All” (fantastic solo after Stephane Grappelli’s introduction on violin) youtu.be “Come Dance With Me” youtu.be The guy was a Uber driver, and he typed the pianists’ names into his iPhone after he arrived at my requested destination and said he’d share them with his customers (he was into modern jazz.) I hope he does – let’s spread great music!
