It's always best to get the queen as close to the king as possible right? The rook is soooo damned tempting though

Yes, it is tempting, but taking a moment to see if there is a better move is always wise. Taking the e pawn with check leaves the king wide open for attack, such that you could mate with your eyes closed, just like in real life
