Why not e7+?

Why is e7+ not a better first move than Nf6+?

1. ... e7+
2. Kg7 or Kg8 or Kh8 e8 promote to queen +
If you see why this doesn't work, could you let me know. When I did it, I got a faster mate. What am I missing?

Whay is e7+ not a better first move?

I think I see why now: Ne6 foils the smooth checkmate and leads to the king wriggling loose and black's passed pawn is still there on g2.

A nearly good move foiled again by logic. Darn those computers!

to be precise :2-e7+,Nf7 kills white hopes.
